FOOD FOR THOUGHT LUNCHTIME LECTURE AT THE ARCHIVES ON THURSDAY, MAY 18 AT 12 PM

PLAY ALL NIGHT! DUANE ALLMAN AND THE JOURNEY TO FILLMORE EAST

PRESENTED BY BOB BEATTY

Montgomery, AL (05/08/2023) –  The Alabama Department of Archives & History (ADAH) will continue its 2023 Food For Thought lunchtime lecture series on Thursday, May 18, at 12 p.m. CT. Bob Beatty will present Play All Night! Duane Allman and the Journey to Fillmore East. The program will be held in the ADAH’s Joseph M. Farley Alabama Power Auditorium in Montgomery. It will also be livestreamed through the ADAH’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. Admission is FREE.

In 1971 the Allman Brothers Band released the musical manifesto At Fillmore East, which Beatty describes as one of the most important live rock albums in history. In this presentation, music historian Bob Beatty will explore the motivations and musical background of band founder Duane Allman, focusing specifically on Allman’s early career as a session musician at Muscle Shoals’ FAME Studios. Beatty’s recent book, Play All Night! is the biography of a sound, highlighting Allman’s musical vision and the ways At Fillmore East demonstrates how Allman and his bandmates brought that vision to life.

Bob Beatty is an historian and musician who has worked in museums and nonprofits for more than 25 years. In 2016, he founded the Lyndhurst Group, a history, museum, and nonprofit consulting firm providing community-focused engagement strategies for institutional planning, organizational assessments, and interpretive direction. He holds a Ph.D. in public history from Middle Tennessee State University.

Copies of Beatty’s book, Play All Night! Duane Allman and the Journey to Fillmore East, will be available for purchase in the ADAH’s Museum Store and online at shopalabamaoriginal.com.
