One of the most bitter and intense legislative battles in Alabama history was fought in a 1965 special session called to consider gubernatorial succession. Join us as Governor Albert Brewer presents “Logjam in the Legislature: The 1965 Battle Over Gubernatorial Succession” on Thursday, March 20, at noon. This ArchiTreats: Food for Thought presentation will be held at the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
Alabama Governor Albert Brewer
The story of the legislative battle is the focus of the presentation by Governor Brewer, who was Speaker of the House in 1965 and a participant in the legislative proceedings. The Alabama constitution prohibited Governor George Wallace from succeeding himself. The proposed amendment, if approved, would have permitted him to run for reelection. The epic struggle pitted the legislative allies of Wallace against legislators supporting prospective candidates for governor who did not want to face the popular Wallace in the 1966 election. The amendment was defeated in the state senate after four weeks of emotionally charged debate. Unable to succeed himself, Wallace ran his wife, Lurleen Wallace, as a “stand in” for him and she was elected over several veteran Alabama political leaders without a run off.
Governor Brewer holds degrees in Political Science, History, and Law from the University of Alabama. Elected Lieutenant Governor in 1966, he became governor in May 1968 upon the death of Lurleen Wallace. He returned to his private law practice in 1979, and joined the faculty of the Cumberland School of Law in 1987. Currently he is Distinguished Professor of Law and Government, Professor Emeritus, at Samford University.
