Joel Daves retired in 2013 after a 30-year career in banking, during which he held executive positions with a large regional bank in each of Alabama's four largest cities. In 2013 he was elected to the District 5 place on the Mobile City Council.


Daves holds a bachelor's degree from the University of the South at Sewanee, TN and received his law degree (cum laude) from Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, FL, where he served as an editor of the law review. He graduated with distinction from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at the University of Delaware. His thesis, prepared in connection with his work at Stonier, was placed in the libraries of the University of Delaware and the Harvard University Graduate School of Business.


Daves currently serves on the board of Infirmary Health System, Inc., the state’s largest non-government healthcare system with three acute-care hospitals totaling 900 beds, three rehabilitation hospitals, three outpatient facilities and 22 medical clinics. He was appointed by both Gov. Bob Riley and Gov. Robert J. Bentley to the Alabama State Council on the Arts and has twice been named to the board of trustees of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, receiving Alabama Senate confirmation.


He is past chairman of the board of United Way of Southwest Alabama and served as co-chairman of the Mobile Area Education Foundation's 80/20 Initiative. As 2012 chairman of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce's annual  total-resources fund drive, Daves led his team in exceeding the drive's $1.5 million goal. He also chaired record-breaking total resources fund drives for the Montgomery and Huntsville chambers of commerce. He served as co-chairman of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce's Partners for Growth 2013-2017 campaign, which raised over $8 million from private sources for economic and workforce development activities. He chaired the United Way of Southwest Alabama's 2010 Community Campaign, which raised over $4.6 million for health and human services agencies.


Long active in arts and business organizations across the state, he is a past board member of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the Mobile Museum of Art, the Montgomery Symphony, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, the Alabama Symphony, the Virginia Samford Theatre and Vulcan Park.


He served on active duty in the United States Navy and in the Navy Reserve, retiring as a Commander.
Daves is married to the former Stephanie Toomey of Mobile. They have two children, Ann Katherine and Joel Thomas Sullivan Daves.
