Keep your cool this summer at the Alabama Department of Archives and History's Hands-On Gallery. Visit during the months of July and August to make and decorate two different kinds of hand fans.

Fans have been used for centuries to keep people cool and fashionable. Fans were an especially popular in the Victorian 19th century. During this time, fans were lavishly decorated and used to send secret messages. Here in Alabama, fans have been an important necessity during the hot summers especially before air conditioning was used.

Take a break from the heat and visit the Hands-On Gallery to make a hand fan.

The Archives is open Monday - Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The Archives museum galleries and participation in this activity are FREE to the public.
