Napoleon Lockett

    Napoleon Lockett was born in Powhatan County, Virginia on February 24, 1813. He married Mary Clay on June 26, 1834. In 1837 they moved to Marion, Alabama, where he became a prominent attorney. It was Mary who suggested that Nicola Marschall design a flag for the Confederacy. Her portrait is on display at the First White House of the Confederacy in Montgomery, Alabama. Napoleon Lockett died on May 20, 1867, and is buried in Marion.
