Hedwig ("Hettie") Schan Schmidt

Born in Prussia in May of 1840, Hedwig "Hettie" Schan was an immigrant to the United States at the age of 15. When Hettie's father died she went to live with her grandparents in Heckling, Germany. "Her grandfather paid the fare for her and a companion to come to America. It is thought that she possessed an adequate if not substantial dowry from the Schan family"*

Hettie married Augustine Schmidt in Demopolis on June 25, 1856. Hettie, (who was almost 20 years younger than her husband) and Augustine "... raised their children in Demopolis where their home was just south of the overhead bridge."* We know they had three children (Eustine (1857), Augustine (1860) and Hetta Margaret (1864), but they might have had more (see "Little Girl" Schmidt). "The Schmidt family were staunch members of Trinity Episcopal Church where there is a window in Hettie's memory. Hettie (Schan) Schmidt died in 1923."*
