Montgomery, AL (07/07/2026) – The Alabama Department of Archives & History (ADAH) will continue its monthly Food for Thought lunchtime lecture series on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 12:00pm CT. Historian Dr. Julia Brock will present Closed Seasons: The Transformation of Hunting in the Modern South. The program will be held in the Archives’ Joseph M. Farley Alabama Power Auditorium in Montgomery. It will also be livestreamed on the ADAH’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. The program is FREE and open to the public.

Dr. Julia Brock traces the creation and evolution of game and fish laws in the Deep South from the Progressive Era to the 1930s, with a close eye on the strategies of conservation advocates, the response by everyday southerners, the changing field of wildlife science, and the increasing role of the federal government in wildlife protection. Alabama takes center stage in this talk on the birth of conservation policy in the South.

Dr. Julia Brock is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Alabama, where she directs a concentration in Public History.
